Crochet Eggs

 

These playful, colorful eggs are created with crochet textured sleeves for purchased plastic eggs. Crochet all three designs: Shell Stitch, Ripple Stitch and Chevron Stitch.

Skill Level: Easy

Abbreviations:

    ch-chain; dc-double crochet; dc2tog-double crochet 2 sts together; rep-repeat; rnd(s)-rnd(s); sc-single crochet; sc2tog-single crochet 2 sts together; sl st-slip stitch; sp(s)-space(s); st(s)-stitch(es); tr-treble crochet

SHELL-STITCH EGGS


Shell Stitch Eggs

Materials Needed:

  • Size 10 crochet thread: we used Aunt Lydia's Crochet Cotton, (100% mercerized cotton), 350 yd (320 m) – about 60 yards (55 m) per egg, color of your choice
  • Boye® crochet hook size C (2.75 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Standard size plastic egg(s)
  • 18 inches (46 cm) narrow satin ribbon

Gauge:

    1 completed shell = 1inch (2.5 cm) in Shell Stitch pattern.
    Take time to check gauge.

Directions:

    Begin with loose slip knot on hook. Work Rnd 1 sts in beginning slip knot, then tighten knot when Rnd 1 is complete.
    Rnd 1 Ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of ch-3—12 dc.
    Rnd 2 Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3—16 dc.
    Rnd 3 Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc; rep from * to last 2 dc, 2 dc in last 2 dc , join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3—22 dc.
    Rnd 4 Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc; rep from * to last 2 dc, dc in last 2 dc, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3—32 dc.
    Rnd 5 Ch 4 (counts as tr), 3 tr in same st, *skip next 3 dc, sc in next dc, skip next 3 dc, 7 tr in next dc (shell made); rep from * around, ending last rep 3 tr in same st as beginning ch-4 , join with sl st to top of beginning ch-4.
    Rnd 6 *7 tr in next sc, sc in 4th tr of next shell; rep from * around, ending last rep sc in top of ch-4 from Rnd 5.
    Rnd 7 Ch 4 (counts as tr), 3 tr in same sc, *sc in 4th tr of next shell, 7 tr in next sc; rep from * around, ending last rep 3 tr in same st as beginning of rnd, join with sl st in top of beginning ch-4.
    Rep Rnds 6 and 7 four more times, ending with Rnd 7—10 rnds. Fasten off.

Finishing:

    Weave in ends. Thread ribbon through one rnd of fans at top of egg and tie a bow to cinch closed.

RIPPLE-STITCH EGGS


Ripple Stitch Eggs

Materials Needed:

  • Size 10 crochet thread: we used Aunt Lydia's Crochet Cotton, (100% mercerized cotton), 350 yd (320 m) – about 70 total yards (64 m) per egg, colors of your choice: 30 yds (28m) (A), 20 yds (18 m) each (B) and (C)
  • Boye® crochet hook size C (2.75 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Standard size plastic egg
  • 18 inches (46 cm) narrow satin ribbon

Gauge:

    9 dc = 1 inch (2.5 cm) in Ripple Stitch pattern.
    Take time to check gauge.

Directions:

    Rnd 5 Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 4 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc; rep from * to last 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in last dc, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3—40 dc. Fasten off B.
    Rnd 6 Join C with sl st to top of any dc, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, *(dc2tog) 2 times, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 dc; rep from * around, omitting last 2 dc, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3.
    Rnd 7 Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, *(dc2tog) 2 times, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 dc; rep from * around, omitting last 2 dc, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off.
    Rnd 8 Join B with sl st to top of beginning ch-3, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, *(dc2tog) 2 times, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 dc; rep from * around, omitting last 2 dc, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3.
    Rnd 9 Rep Rnd 7.
    Rnds 10-11 With A, rep Rnds 8-9. Fasten off.

    Rnds 15-16 With C, rep Rnds 8-9. Fasten off.
    Rnd 17 With B, rep Rnd 8. Fasten off.
    Rnd 18 Join A with sl st to any dc, *ch 6, skip 2 dc, sl st in next dc; rep from * around, join with sl st to beginning sl st.

Finishing:

    Weave in ends. Thread ribbon through eyelet rnd and tie a bow to cinch closed.

CHEVRON STITCH EGGS


Chevron Stitch Eggs

Materials Needed:

    Rnd 2 Join B with sl st to any dc, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3—16 dc. Fasten off.
    Rnd 3 Join C with sl st to any dc, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc; rep from * to last 2 dc, 2 dc in last 2 dc , join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3—22 dc. Fasten off.
    Rnd 4 Continuing Color Sequence (see above), join B with sl st to top of any dc, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3—33 dc. Do not fasten off.

SIDEWAYS RIPPLE

    With B, ch 24.
    Row 1 Working in back loops only, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, *sc in next 4 ch, skip next 2 ch, sc in next 4 ch**, 3 sc in next ch; rep from * to ** once more, 2 sc in last ch, sl st to next dc on egg base at end of row just worked, sl st in next dc, turn.
    Row 2 2 sc in first sc, *sc in next 4 sc, skip next 2 sc, sc in next 4 sc**, 3 sc in next sc; rep from * to ** once more, 2 sc in last sc, turn. Fasten off. To save time, weave in ends as you go.
    Row 3 Join A with sc in first st, *sc in next 4 sc, skip next 2 sc, sc in next 4 sc**, 3 sc in next sc; rep from * to ** once more, 2 sc in last sc, sl st to next dc on egg base at end of row just worked, sl st in next dc, turn.
    Row 4 Rep Row 2. Fasten off.
    Rows 5-6 With B, rep Rows 3- 4.
    Rows 7-32 Continue in this manner, changing color every 2 rows according to Color Sequence above. At the end of Row 32, do not fasten off. All rows are complete after all dc sts on base have been attached to sideways ripple pattern with Sl st.
    Turn work inside out and join Row 1 with Row 32 with sl st across row, working into front loops only of Row 32. Weave in ends.

TOP RUFFLE

    Rnd 1 Join B with sc in any row end, ch 1, sc in end of each row around (2 sc in each colored stripe, join with sl st to beginning sc—32 sc.
    Rnd 2 Ch 2 (counts as sc), *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc; rep from * to last sc, sc in last sc, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-2—38 sc.
    Rnd 3 Ch 2 (counts as sc), sc in each st around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-2.
    Rnd 4 (Eyelet rnd) Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next sc, *ch 2, skip next 2 sc, dc in next 2 sc; rep from * to last 2 sc, dc in last 2 dc, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3.
    Rnd 5 Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next dc, *2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 2 dc; rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off.
    Rnd 6 Join A with sl st in first st, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same st, *dc in next 5 dc, skip next 2 dc**, dc in next 5 dc, 3 dc in next dc; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in last dc, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3—39 sts. Fasten off.
    Rnd 7 Join B with sl st in first st, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same st, *dc in next 5 dc, skip next 2 dc, dc in next 5 dc**, 3-dc in next dc; rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off.
    Rnd 8: With C, rep Rnd 7.
    Rnd 9: With B, rep Rnd 7.
    Rnd 10 Join A with sl st in any dc, *ch 4, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc; rep from * around, ending ch 4, sl st in first st.

Finishing:

    Weave in ends. Thread ribbon through eyelet rnd and tie a bow to cinch closed.
