Crossed Stockinette Stitch Pattern:

    Row 1: EWK all pegs
    Row 2: FK all pegs
Rep Row 1 & 2 for Crossed Stockinette stitch pattern.

I-Cord:

CO two sts (or desired number) using EW method. Pass WY behind the stitches just cast on back to the beginning. Holding yarn in front of the pegs, FK each st.
Continue each row by passing yarn behind sts and knitting off. As you work you will see a tight tube being formed. To end, move lp on peg-2 to peg-1 and knit off. Cut yarn leaving a 6" (15 cm) tail and draw through last loop. Fasten off and weave end into center of tube.

Gauge:

10 stitches in Crossed Stockinette stitches worked over 16 rows measures 4" (10 cm) square. Take time to check gauge.

Directions: Hat

With two strands of A, CO using EW method.
Rnds 1-6: Cont with A and work Crossed Stockinette Stitch pattern three times.
Rnds 7-8: Change to color B, work Crossed Stockinette Stitch pattern once (Note: Do not cut color A. Drop color A to the inside of the loom and beg knitting with color B on peg-1).
Rnds 9-10: At the beg of rnd 9, drop color B to the inside of the loom, pick up color A from underneath the current strand twisting color A and B to prevent gaps in your knitting. With A work the Crossed Stockinette Stitch pattern once. Be sure to follow the previously started information regarding carrying the second color from one row to the next.
Rep Rnds 7-10 until hat measures 7" (18 cm) or desired height.
Shift the lps on all the odd pegs to the adjacent even peg (i.e., shift peg-1 to peg-2, shift peg-3 to peg-4, etc.) until all odd numbered pegs are empty and all even numbered pegs have two lps each. With the WY sl the odd pegs, FK two lps over one lp on all even pegs.
    Work gathered BO as follows:
    • Cut the working yarn leaving approximately 24" (61 cm) yarn tail.
    • Thread the yarn onto a yarn needle.
    • Starting with peg-2, insert the needle below the lp and pull the yarn through.
    • Insert the needle below the lps on the next even numbered peg and rep the previous step on all remaining pegs with lps and once more into the beg lp on peg-2.
    • Remove the lps from the pegs, turn the hat inside out and pull the yarn tail until the opening is completely closed.
Secure the opening by stitching back and forth then tying a knot with the yarn tail.
Fasten, trim and secure all yarn tails.

Directions: Ears (make 2; each ear is made in two parts and seamed together)

    Outer Ear
Using two strands of A and 7 pegs, work an adjustable CO as follows:
    • Slip knot beginning yarn tail to anchor peg leaving an approximate 10" (25 cm) beginning yarn tail (this will be used later to seam the ear to the hat).
    • Using pegs 1-7 on the round loom, weave the yarn in front of the odd numbered pegs (1, 3, 5 & 7) and behind even numbered pegs (2, 4 & 6).
    • Complete the adjustable CO, by turning on peg-7, wrap peg-7 again and knit off. YO peg-6; FK peg-5; YO peg-4; FK peg-3; YO peg-2 and FK peg-1 to complete the adjustable CO.
Rows 1-7: Sl 1, FK 6 on each row.
Row 8: Beg dec by shifting the two end sts on both sides over one peg toward the middle so the second peg from the each end will have two lps. Sl 1, K2tog, FK 1, K2tog, FK 1 (5 pegs).
    Row 9: Sl 1, FK 4 (5 pegs).
Row 10: Dec the two end sts as in Row 8, which will leave 3 pegs with three lps on the middle peg. Sl 1, K3tog on the middle pegs, FK 1 on the last peg (3 pegs).
    Row 11: Sl 1, FK 2 (3 pegs).
Row 12: Dec by moving both end lps to middle peg with WY lp on top. Knit the bottom two lps over the top lps.
Cut WY, wrap and knit off again pulling the ending yarn tail through the last st. Secure and trim the ending yarn tail.

    Inner Ear
Using one strand of C and 5 pegs, work adjustable CO as described for Outer Ear.
Rows 1-5: FK 5 on each row.
Row 6: Beg dec by shifting the end sts on both sides over one peg toward the middle so both end pegs will have two lps. FK 3 (3 pegs).
    Rows 7-11: FK 3.
Row 12: Dec by moving both end lps to middle peg with WY lp on top. Knit the bottom two lps over the top lps.
Cut WY leaving a 12" (30 cm) yarn tail; wrap and knit off again pulling the ending yarn tail through the last st.

Finishing the Ears

With wrong sides together, position and pin the Inner Ear to the Outer Ear and stitch in place using the ending C yarn tail. Using the beginning A yarn tail, cinch the adjustable CO edge until the base of the ear is about 1" (2.5 cm) wide and tie a knot to secure. Position and pin the base of the ears about 2" (5 cm) apart on the top of the kitten's head. Thread the beginning yarn tail onto the yarn needle and stitch the ears in place. Secure and trim the yarn tail.

Directions: Nose

Using two strands of C and 5 pegs, work an adjustable CO as described for the Outer Ear above.
Rows 1-3: FK 5 on each row.
Row 4: Beg dec by shifting the end sts on both sides over one peg toward the middle so both end pegs will have two lps. KF 3 (3 pegs).
Row 5: FK all three pegs.
Row 6: Shift the two outer lps to the middle peg with WY lp on top; knit the bottom two lps over the top WY lp. Fasten off and secure leaving a 12" (30 cm) yarn tail.

Finishing the Nose

Adjust the CO edge to desired length by pulling the beg yarn tail. When desired length is achieved, fasten off and secure the CO edge.
Center nose approximately 1.75" (4.5 cm) above bottom edge of hat, pin and stitch in place using a yarn needle threaded with the ending yarn tail.

Directions: Eyes (make 2 in color D)

Using one strand of D and 12 pegs, work an adjustable CO as follows:
    • Slip knot beginning yarn tail to anchor peg leaving an approximate 10" (25 cm) beginning yarn tail (this will be used later on to seam the eye to the hat).
    • Using pegs 1-12 on the round loom, weave the yarn back and forth in front of the odd numbered pegs (1, 3, 5, 7, 9 & 11) and behind even numbered pegs (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12).
    • Complete the adjustable CO, by turning on peg-12 and laying the WY above the strand of yarn on peg-11; knit the bottom strand over the top WY strand. Pass the WY in front of peg-10 (YO). Cont knitting the bottom strand over the top strand on all odd numbered pegs and YO on all even numbered pegs to complete the adjustable CO.
Rows 1-2: FK on all 12 pegs.
Work a double BO as follows:
    • FK the first two pegs; shift the lp from the second peg to the first peg and knit the bottom lp over the top lp; shift the st back to the second peg.
    • *Cont BO by FK the current peg and the next peg; shift the lp from the second peg to the first peg; knit bottom lp over the top lp and shift back to the second peg. Rep from * until all pegs have been knitted off. Cut leaving an extra long yarn tail for seaming the eye patch to the hat.
    • Using the beginning yarn tail, cinch the adjustable CO edge as tightly as possible. Secure the beginning yarn tail on the wrong side. Thread the yarn tail onto a yarn needle and seam the sides on the wrong side; tie off and trim.

Finishing the Eyes

Using the photo for reference, position the outer eye rings just above and on either side of the nose; pin and stitch in place using the ending yarn tail and a yarn needle. Cut two one inch circles of black felt. Stitch circles to center of each eye ring.

Finishing

Mouth: With one strand of color C, work a tight 2-peg I-cord 3" (7.5 cm) long; fasten off leaving 12" (30 cm) tail. Pin mouth in place as shown in photo. Thread yarn needle with the yarn tail and stitch to hat through center of cord.
Whiskers: Cut 20" (51 cm) piece of yarn in color D and stitch in place as shown in photo.
