Knit Eggs

These playful, colorful eggs are created by knitting textured sleeves for purchased plastic eggs. Knit all three designs: Eyelet, Lacy, and Basket Weave.

EYELET KNIT EGGS


Knit Garter Stitch Kimono

Abbreviations:

    K = knit; K2tog = knit two stitches together; p2tog = purl two stitches together; sts = stitches; yo = yarn over

Size:

    6 (12-18-24) mos
    To fit chest measurement: 17 (18-19-20) ins [43 (45.5-48-53.5) cm]
    Finished chest: 21 (22-23-24) ins [53.5 (56-58.5-63.5) cm]

Materials Needed:

  • Size US 2/2.75mm Boye® 7" Double Point Aluminum Needles
  • Standard size plastic egg
  • ½ yard of satin ribbon
  • Boye® Tapestry needle
  • BRIGHT EGG - 20 yards of Color A, 15 yards each of Color A, and 10 yards each of Colors C and D (55 total yards) fingering weight wool/nylon blend yarn
  • PASTEL EGG – 25 yards of Color A, 15 yards each of Colors B and C (55 total yards) fingering weight wool/nylon blend yarn

  • (Original models made using approx. 40 total yards of various sock yarns)

Gauge:

    7 sts = 1" in stockinette stitch. SAVE TIME - CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Change needle size as necessary to achieve specified gauge.

Color Sequence (Pastel):

  1. Color A – Pink
  2. Color B – Mint
  3. Color A – Pink
  4. Color C – Yellow

  5. (after using Color C in this sequence, begin sequence again using Color A [1.])

Color Sequence (Bright):

  1. Color A – Hot Pink
  2. Color B – Red
  3. Color A – Hot Pink
  4. Color C – Yellow
  5. Color A – Hot Pink
  6. Color D – Orange

  7. (after using Color D in this sequence, begin sequence again starting with Color A [1.])

Directions:

    Cast on 140 sts with 1st color in SEQUENCE above. Distribute equally around 3 double-pointed needles (use the 4th to knit), and join for knitting in the round. Place marker to indicate beginning of the round.
    Round 1: Knit.
    Round 2: K2tog around. (70 sts)
    Round 3: Knit.
    Round 4: K2tog around to last 2 sts, K2. (36 sts)
    Round 5 – 6: Knit, changing colors according to next color in SEQUENCE above on Round 6.
    Round 7: Purl.
    Round 8: Yo, p2tog.
    Round 9: Purl. (36 sts)
    Rounds 10 – 13: Knit, changing color according to SEQUENCE at the beginning of Rounds 10 and 13.
    Rounds 14 – 16: Repeat Rounds 7 – 9.
    Rounds 17 – 20: Knit, changing color according to SEQUENCE at the beginning of Rounds 17 and 20.
    Rounds 21 – 23: Repeat Rounds 7 -9.
    Rounds 24 – 27: Knit, changing color according to SEQUENCE at the beginning of Round 27.
    Rounds 28 – 30: Repeat Rounds 7 -9.
    Round 31: Knit.
    Round 32: K4, k2tog around.
    Round 33: K3, k2tog around.
    Round 34: K2, k2tog around.
    Round 35: K1, k2tog around.
    Round 36: K2tog around. Break yarn. Feed tail through tapestry needle and through 6 remaining stitches, and cinch.

Finishing:

    Secure all ends. Thread ribbon in and out of the negative spaces created after completing Rounds 7 - 9, and tie a bow to cinch and form drawstring.

LACY KNIT EGGS


Knit Garter Stitch Kimono

Abbreviations:

    K = knit; K2tog = knit two stitches together; SSK = slip next two stitches as if to knit from left needle to right needle, then insert left needle into the front of these two stitches and knit them in this position through the back loop (1 st decreased); sts = stitches; yo = yarn over

Materials Needed:

Gauge:

    1 pattern repeat = 1.5" in pattern stitch. SAVE TIME - CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Change needle size as necessary to achieve specified gauge.

Pattern Stitch:

    Round 1: *(K1, yo, K2, SSK, k2tog, K2, yo); repeat from * around.
    Round 2: Knit.
    Round 3: *(yo, K2, SSK, k2tog, K2, yo, K1); repeat from * around.
    Round 4: Knit.
    Round 5: Knit.
    Round 6: Purl.
    Round 7: Knit.

Directions:

    Cast on 45 sts. Distribute equally around 3 double-pointed needles (use the 4th to knit), and join for knitting in the round. Place marker to indicate beginning of the round.
    Round 1: Purl
    Rounds 2 – 11: Work Rounds 1 -7 of PATTERN STITCH twice, stopping after completing Round 4 during the second repeat. (11 total rounds)
    Round 12: K3, K2tog around. (36 sts)
    Round 13: Purl.
    Round 14: Yo, p2tog.
    Round 15: Purl.
    Rounds 16 – 31: Beginning with Round 1, work in PATTERN STITCH three times, stopping after completing Round 4 during the third repeat. (18 total rounds)
    Round 32: K4, k2tog around.
    Round 33: K3, k2tog around.
    Round 34: K2, k2tog around.
    Round 35: K1, k2tog around.
    Round 36: K2tog around. Break yarn. Feed tail through tapestry needle and through 6 remaining stitches, and cinch.

Finishing:

    Secure all ends. Thread ribbon in and out of the negative spaces created after completing Round 14, and tie a bow to cinch and form drawstring.

BASKET WEAVE KNIT EGGS

    Round 1 - 11: Work in PATTERN STITCH above.

    Round 13: Purl.
    Round 14: (yo, p2tog) around.
    Round 15: Purl.
    Round 16: Knit.
    Rounds 17 – 35: Work in PATTERN STITCH above, ending after completing Round 7.
    Round 36: K4, k2tog around.
    Round 37: K3, k2tog around.
    Round 38: K2, k2tog around.
    Round 39: K1, k2tog around.
    Round 40: K2tog around. Break yarn. Feed tail through tapestry needle and through 6 remaining stitches, and cinch.
