Spool Knit Flowers

Loom FlowersLoom Flowers
The Boye® Jumbo Spool Knitter is designed to make skinny scarves, handles, straps and cords. This loom has one end with 5 pegs that will make narrower knit tubes, and a larger end with 8 pegs that will make wider tubes. The 8-peg end can also make multi-petal flowers that can stand alone or be used for larger flower centers. Use both ends together to create these fabulous 5-petal flowers in a wide variety of colors and textures.

Skill Level: Easy

FIVE PETAL KNIT FLOWER INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Drop the end of the yarn down the middle of the spool so that it extends about 5"-6" below the bottom. Hold the yarn in place with your fingers until several pegs have been wrapped.

  2. To cast on, begin with any peg and wrap the yarn around the first peg in a clockwise direction. This is known as the E-wrap Cast On, which forms a series of loops on the spool that enables you to begin knitting.

  3. Slide the yarn loops to the bottom of the pegs. Wrap a second row.

  4. Using the loom hook, lift the bottom row of loops over the top loops to knit off the pegs.

  5. Gently tug the yarn tail every few rows to secure the stitches. Repeat the E-wrapping and lifting loops until the tube measures 25" in length.
  6. To complete the tube, you will need to secure the last set of loops using the Gathered Binding Off technique. When you have completed your last round and now only have one loop on each peg, cut the working yarn, leaving about a 24" tail. Thread the yarn onto the needle. Insert the needle below the loop of the closet peg and pull the yarn through. Repeat with all pegs around the spool; when you get back to the first peg, insert the yarn into the first loop again, completing the circle. Remove the loops from the pegs and pull the working yarn as tightly as possible to close the ends. Secure by stitching back and forth, leaving a 12" tail. Cinch other end of tube in the same manner.
  7. Fold the finished tube into 5 equally-sized loops. Use the yarn tails to fasten the loops together in the center. Finish the flower with a decorative button, pom pom or small flower made using the 8-peg end of the loom using the Flower Loom method shown below.

FLOWER LOOM METHOD INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE: For your convenience, you may want to number the pegs on your loom. Photos shown here demonstrate the Flower Loom Method on the 12-peg Boye® Bloom Loom (link to http://www.simplicity.com/c-978-loom-knitting.aspx), which uses the same method to create flowers.
  1. To start, leave an 8" tail and secure to yarn to peg 1 with a slip knot to anchor it.
  2. Take the working yarn across the spool from the space between pegs 1 and 8 to between pegs 4 and 5. Wrap yarn around peg 4 as shown.

  3. Bring yarn back across the loom to the space between pegs 1 and 8 and wrap yarn around peg 8.
  4. Take the yarn across the loom and wrap peg 3 as shown.

  5. Continue wrapping in this manner until each peg has been wrapped.

  6. Wrap the spool two more times so you have a total of 3 layers.

  7. Thread a yarn needle with about 36" length of yarn or thread – this thread can be the same color or use a contrast for a decorative center. Coming from the underside of the spool, bring the yarn up between pegs 4 and 5, leaving a 6" tail on the underside. Insert the needle between pegs 8 and 1. On underside of spool use the tail and the working yarn to center and the flower.

  8. Bring the thread up between pegs 3 and 4, and down between pegs 7 and 8. Continue in this manner until the center is shaped and the yarn has crossed between all pegs. After sewing between all pegs, if desired, use either the same yarn or a contrast color and sew within the petals. Fasten off on the back of the flower.

  9. When finished, tie ends on the back of the flower and release from spool.
