Woven Crochet Scarf

Designed by Gloria Tracy

Woven Crochet Scarf
This simple scarf is a great first project – a simple crochet mesh forms the background for woven strands that create a dramatic one-of-a-kind plaid. So easy to make you'll want one in every color combination.

Skill Level: Beginner

    ch-chain; dc-double crochet; rep-repeat; sc-single crochet; st(s)-stitch(es)

One size: 4" (10 cm) wide x 50" (127 cm) long, excluding fringe

Materials Needed:

12 sc & 15 rows = 4" (10 cm). Gauge is not critical for this project.

The one-row crochet pattern forms a mesh. Strands of the remaining yarn are cut and woven through the mesh columns in an alternating pattern. When multi-color yarn is used, the mesh forms horizontal stripes of recurring colors and the woven strands form vertical stripes to create the appearance of plaid.

Foundation row: Ch 20, dc in 6th ch from hook (counts as dc, ch 1 and skip 1 ch), *ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch, rep from * across, turn.
Row 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), skip first dc, *dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from *, ending last dc in 3rd ch of turning ch of row below, turn.
Rep Row 1 until piece is 50" (127 cm) long or desired length. Fasten off.

Weave in ends. Lay mesh flat and carefully measure length.
Cut 32 strands of remaining yarn 20" (51 cm) longer than scarf – 4 strands for each of the 8 vertical columns in the mesh.

*Hold 4 strands together. To weave, thread yarn needle with all four strands and weave in and out of the vertical mesh alternating over/under at each row, and leaving an equal length of tail at each end. Arrange the tails at each end of the column with 2 to the back and two to the front. Knot front tail and back tail together to form fringe. Rep from * for remaining 7 mesh columns. Trim fringe.
