Skill Level: EASY

beg – beginning; K – knit; K2tog – knit two together; P – purl; rem – remaining; rep – repeat; rnd – round; sl – slip; st(s) – stitch(es); St st – stockinette stitch; tog – together

Approximately 2 in (5 cm) wide by 4 in (10 cm) long (from top of cuff to base of heel).

With size 6 (4.25 mm) needles (or size required to obtain gauge) in stockinette stitch, 5 sts and 7 rows = 1 in (2.5 cm). Gauge is not critical for this project.

Beg at top with white yarn, cast on 20 sts loosely.
Rows 1-9: Knit
Row 10: Purl. Cut white, leaving approximately 16 in (40 cm) tail for cuff seam. Join red, leaving approximately 20 in (50 cm) tail for sewing back and sole seam later.
Row 11: Knit.
Row 12: Purl.
Continue in St st (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) and work even for 16 more rows, ending by working a purl row.

Row 1 (dividing row): K 13 (leave rem 7 sts unworked).
Row 2: P6 (leave rem 7 sts unworked).
Continue on center 6 sts only, work 4 more rows even in St st, ending by working a purl row. Cut yarn, leaving all sts on needles.

Row 1: With right side facing and beginning at base of 7 sts on right needle, join red, pick up 6 sts along right edge of instep and place them on right needle. Knit across 6 instep sts, pick up 6 sts along left edge of instep, knit rem 7 sts (32 sts now on needle).
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: K2tog; * K13, K2tog; rep from * once more (29 sts).
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: K2tog; K11, K2tog; K12, K2tog (26 sts).
Row 6: Purl.
Row 7: K2tog; * K10, K2tog; rep from * once more (23 sts).
Row 8: Purl.

Bind off all sts in knit. Cut yarn.

Thread 20 in (50 cm) red sewing length (below cuff) onto yarn needle and sew back and sole seam. Then thread 16 in (40 cm) white sewing length (at base of cuff) into yarn needle and sew seam on cuff. Fold down cuff. Make a 1 in (2.5 cm) yarn loop at top of stocking and fasten ends securely. (OPTIONAL: to make a thicker loop, cast on 20 sts. Bind off leaving 8 in (20 cm) tail. Fold to form loop and sew to cuff.) Weave in all ends.
