Instructions
Jack O'Lantern Block
Cut:
- One 8 1/2" square black.
- One strip each 1", 1 1/2", 2" and 2 1/2" widths of various oranges.
- One 2" x 4" strip of green.
Sew the orange strips together from light to dark until piece is 7" wide. Press seams toward one side. Using Easy Hexagon™ tool, cut a hex with finished edge of 3". Cut similar size piece of interfacing. Fuse to back of pumpkin.
Fold both long edges of green strip to the center wrong sides together, then fold in half. Press. Fold strip in half lengthwise to form a stem. Set aside.
Center pumpkin in center of 8 1/2" black square, inserting stem in top and pin to secure. Satin stitch around pumpkin, securing bottom of stem (top part of stem is free.)
Witch's Hat Block
Cut:
- One 6 1/2" Tri from purple.
- One 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" strip purple.
- Two 6 1/2" Recs shapes from black.
- One 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" strip black.
Stitch one Recs to either side of the Tri shape. Stitch one 6 1/2" length black strip to either side of the Tri-Recs block. Stitch 1 1/2" strip of purple to bottom of block. Stitch 1 1/2" strip black to top of block. Press.
Candy Corn Block
Cut:
- One 2 1/2" x 7" strip each of cream, yellow and orange fabrics
- Two 6 1/2" Recs shapes from black.
- Two 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips of black
- Two 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips of black.
Sew cream strip to yellow strip, then yellow strip to orange strip. Press seams to one side. Cut a Tri shape.
Stitch one Recs to each side of the Tri. Stitch a black 1 1/2" strip to each side of block, then stitch an 8 1/2" length to top and bottom of block. Press.
Spider Block
Cut:
- One 3" hexagon from green print and interfacing.
- One 1" hexagon from green print and interfacing.
- One 8 1/2" square from black.
Fuse interfacing to wrong side of green hexagons. Fold black square in half diagonally and press. Open block and place large hexagon so top and bottom corner are on diagonal fold line. Pin.
Place smaller hexagon at top of larger hexagon in a similar manner and pin. Satin stitch around both shapes, catching smaller hexagon under larger hexagon. Using a decorative stitch, stitch 8 legs to complete the spider. Press.
Sashing
Cut two strips 2" x 8 1/2" long. Sew a strip between the hat block and the candy corn block. Sew the other between the pumpkin block and the spider block.
Cut one strip 2" x 18 1/2". Join rows as shown in illustration.
Border
Cut two 8 1/2" wide strips width of background fabric. Measure quilt sides, trim strip to size and stitch to each side of quilt.
Repeat for top and bottom of quilt.
Quilt
Layer with batting and backing. Quilt as desired. DO NOT TRIM BORDER. Using Flex Design Ruler™ create web shape in border using marking pencil to lightly mark the fabric (see illustration for reference).
Stitch single fold binding along web shape. Trim seam allowance. Fold binding to wrong side and slip stitch to backing.
Embellish
- Witch hat - Stitch or glue buttons to make a "band".
- Pumpkin - Stitch or glue buttons for eyes and mouth.
- Spider - Add button eyes.
- Glue or stitch Glow in the Dark Rick Rack to form web as in photo.
