Sewing your own jeans is one of those milestone projects that feels like a real achievement. It’s a slightly longer make, yes... but that’s exactly what makes it so satisfying and a great resolution for this year's sewing adventures! You’ll stretch your skills, explore new techniques, and end up with a beautifully fitted pair of jeans tailored exactly to your measurements.
Jeans are a wardrobe staple so you'll get a lot of wear and feel a lot of pride with a handmade pair. We'll talk you through the various things you need to think about when picking your pattern and gathering your supplies.
Design Your Dream Jeans
When it comes to style, the options are endless. From classic skinny cuts to dramatic flares, relaxed wide legs to on-trend barrel shapes, we have a jean pattern for everyone.
Many designs also include all those iconic details that make denim so enjoyable to sew: crisp topstitching, sturdy hardware, and practical pockets with the option for decorative stitching.
Topstitching is often the part sewists look forward to most; it’s where your jeans really start to look “ready-to-wear.” Installing rivets and hammering in that final button can feel slightly nerve-wracking, but it’s incredibly satisfying once done.
Make sure to choose a thicker topstitching thread for any buttonholes and topstitching. If you're worried about how neat your stitching is, try a coordinating color rather than contrasting which leaves no where to hide!
You'll benefit from practicing a fly front zipper before diving into the real thing. Remember you can adjust the length of your jeans zipper to be the perfect match.
Here are a few pattern ideas to help you visualize how different styles of leg shape and length look. And the range includes plus size jeans sewing patterns with women’s sizing.
We have men's styles too with a range of leg shapes and pocket styles to choose from.
Extra Support For Your Creativity
If you’d love a little extra support along the way, patterns from Mimi G and her Know Me pattern line are fantastic options. Designs such as S8516 and ME2002 are supported with step-by-step video sewalongs, so you’re never left guessing. As well as being VP of Patterns, Mimi G is one of our indie sewing pattern collabs and she created the Know Me pattern line which helps members of the sewing community share their patterns with a wider audience.
