Understanding Sewing Pattern Ratings

Learn more about our pattern ratings to ensure you pick the right project for your skill level.

Did you know that Simplicity Brands uses four different sewing-skill ratings across its patterns? These ratings, Very Easy, Easy, Average, and Advanced, are designed to help you choose projects that match your experience, confidence level, and the amount of time you have to sew.

Let’s break down what each category means and who it’s designed for.

Very Easy

Also known as "New to Sewing" = Very Easy patterns for getting started.

Best for: Beginners and experienced sewists who want a quick, simple project.

“Very Easy” patterns are the quickest and simplest to sew. They feature minimal construction details and little to no hand sewing or fitting. If you’re just starting out or you’re a seasoned sewist looking for a satisfying, quick make, this rating is perfect for you.

Easy

Also known as "Beginner" = Easy patterns for growing your skills.

Best for: Confident beginners or anyone with a little sewing experience.

If you’re comfortable using your machine and with basic techniques but aren’t quite ready for more complex construction, “Easy” patterns are a great choice. They’re still beginner-friendly, but include a little more detail than the “Very Easy” category. They’re ideal if you’re building your skills or working with limited time.

Average

Also known as "Intermediate" = Average-rated patterns for expanding your abilities. You've got the basics down, now tackle projects with new techniques, playful details, and small challenges to grow as a sewist.

Best for: Sewists with some experience who want to learn new techniques or spend more time on construction.

“Average” patterns include more detailed construction steps, additional techniques, and more involved fitting. You’ll also encounter a wider range of fabrics, including faux fur, faux leather, suede, and other materials that require a bit more sewing knowledge. These projects are rewarding and perfect for leveling up your skills.

Advanced

Also known as "Experienced" = Advanced patterns for mastering your craft. For sewists with advanced skills, these patterns refind your technique with sophisticated construction, intricate details, and polished results.

Best for: Experienced sewists looking for couture-level detail and precision.

You’ll find the “Advanced” rating on Vogue Patterns. These patterns include sophisticated construction methods, couture techniques, and more extensive fitting. They typically require patience, precision, and confidence in your sewing skills. Expect hand-sewing elements and intricate details. These patterns are ideal for sewists ready for a challenge.
