"Jessica McClintock fashions were worn for moments that were very emotionally important - your engagement, graduation, wedding, or prom. You remember what you wore to prom for the rest of your life!"
– Mary Santoro, Jessica McClintock’s sister
For decades, Jessica McClintock gowns have been closely associated with milestone celebrations — prom nights, formal dances, weddings, and many other memorable occasions. And these memories have become part of the brand’s cultural legacy.
One of the key reasons the brand has maintained such lasting admiration is its signature aesthetic. With clean lines, balanced proportions, and elegant fabrics, the brand became widely recognized for designs that capture a fairytale-like quality while still feeling wearable.
Young women tore pages out of magazines to find their dream JMC dress and coordinated with the rest of their class to make sure no one wore the same design.
Gunne Sax and Jessica McClintock
Gunne Sax was started in 1969 in San Francisco, by Jessica McClintock. The brand drew inspiration from the Victorian, Edwardian, and Pioneer eras, reimagining historic silhouettes for a new generation with great success.
By the 1980s, the Jessica McClintock brand had emerged, evolving out of the earlier Gunne Sax label. Jessica McClintock remains widely remembered for shaping the classic American prom dress aesthetic for several decades.
Jessica McClintock × Simplicity
Since 1974, Gunne Sax / Jessica McClintock sewing patterns have been available from Simplicity, making the brand's signature styles accessible to home sewists everywhere. Makers could bring these designs to life on their own machines, learning new techniques while creating garments for milestone moments and everyday wear.
Following on from the bestselling Gunne Sax collection we released earlier this year, we're excited to announce our collection of Jessica McClintock signature formal patterns, perfect for your next special occasion.
S3249: The Secret Two-Piece
Choose this design when you want the look of a dress but the flexibility to rewear each piece for future events. The boned bustier top features a button back closure and crossed strap detail at the front. Pair with a full dramatic skirt, enhanced by its built in petticoat.
Prom, Stitched Up
Sewing your own prom dress is one of the most exciting things you can do. You get to choose the fabric, select the design, and create something that reflects your own style, rather than stressing over expensive dresses that don’t quite feel like you.
Starting with an easy-to-sew pattern is a great way to begin, and watching the dress come together makes the process incredibly rewarding. Walking into prom wearing something you made yourself is something to feel truly proud of. Your dress will be completely unique, and when people ask where you got it, the best part is being able to say, "I made it."

"It’s wonderful to see new makers discovering the patterns and making these designs their own. That’s how a legacy stays alive."
