Lapped Seams

Duration2:41

A lapped seam adds a decorative element to your garments. It is created by placing one piece of fabric on top of another to create an overlap at the seam allowance. Then, a straight stitch is then placed ¼ inch from the edge of the fold.

Tips to Remember

  • Lapped seams are common nonwoven fabrics like suede and leather because the edges don't fray.
  • Remember to trim away to seam allowance from the upper lapped seam and then lap it over the underneath section.
  • To stitch a lapped seam, edgestich along the trimmed edge, and topstich ¼" away from the edgestitch.
